Mixing oil with gasoline keeps the chain saw’s engine from seizing, and when mixed properly, prevents internal parts from excessive wear. If you have an older model chain saw, such as the Super PM 610, Pro Mac 605/610 or Eager Beaver 3.7 manufactured in the 1980s, McCulloch recommends using McCulloch Two-Cycle Custom Lubricant mixed with gasoline at a ratio of 40:1.
Two-Cycle Engine Oil
If you can’t find the type of engine oil recommended in your operator’s manual, McCulloch allows use of high quality two-cycle oil as a substitute. The ratio depends on the machine. For older models like Super PM 610, Pro Mac 605/610 or Eager Beaver 3.7, mix two-cycle oil to gasoline at a 20:1 ratio, with 20 parts gasoline and one part oil. In newer chainsaw models, such as the MC4218AV, McCulloch recommends mixing high quality synthetic two-cycle oil at a 40:1 ratio. In either case, use two-cycle oil made for air-cooled engines. Do not use two-cycle oil made for marine motors. You could damage your chain saw's engine.

However this product may no longer be available. McCulloch recommends substituting SAE 30 and SAE 10 motor oil in its place for older models of chain saws. Newer models can use SAE 30 motor oil or a good quality brand of bar and chain oil such as McCulloch eco-friendly vegetable based chain oil. Check your operator's manual for which oil is appropriate.
SAE Non-Additive Motor Oil
When you’re powering down tree limbs in temperatures above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, McCulloch recommends using SAE 30 non-additive motor oil to lube the bar and chain in older and newer models of chain saws. When the temperature dips below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, switch to SAE 10 non-additive motor oil to keep it flowing to the chain. SAE oils can be used to lube the bar and chain on both gas and electric models. Do not re-use motor oil from other applications to fill the oiler tank. Dirty oil can contain metal shavings that clog the oiler pump.
